William Healey Dall Collection

Alaska Native items collected by William H. Dall, scientist and explorer who first came to Alaska in 1865-67 with the Western Union Telegraph Expedition. The expedition was studying the route of a proposed telegraph line between North American and Europe via Siberia. Dall was a noted naturalist and paleontologist, authoring over 500 scientific papers (Dall's Sheep and Dall's Porpoise are named in his honor). These items are a selection of a forty-five piece collection donated by Mr & Mrs. Mark H. Dall.
