Salmon Packing in Alaska The 1880s brought the first canneries to Alaska, providing employment for immigrants to the territory from the lower 48. Canneries also employed Alaska Natives, who fished, worked the "slime line," and made cans and crates. In the 20th century, with the improvement of freezer technology, and the decline of many fisheries due to overfishing and environmental changes, canneries became a rarity. These scarce and fragile salmon cans, crates, and other items representing Alaskan canneries and commercial fishing are new to the collection. |
