Deputy U. S. Marshal J. M. Tanner's gold badge Josias M. "Si" Tanner lead the
roundup of Soapy Smith's gang following Smith's death, and helped prevent
the outbreak of vigilante revenge. Tanner was deputized to replace the
previous deputy marshal, who had been a gang member. Grateful Skagway
citizens used gold recovered from Soapy's possessions to make this badge
for Tanner. The reverse is inscribed "Presented by J. D. Stewart." Stewart
was the miner whose robbery set off the chain of events that led to
Soapy's demise.
