World War II in Alaska

The war profoundly and forever changed life in Alaska. For the first time since the War of 1812, foreign forces occupied American soil. Japanese troops captured the Aleutian islands of Attu and Kiska, causing great hardship and loss of life. Many of the buildings, ports, roads, and airstrips constructed in support of the Aleutian campaign are still used today. Over sixty year later, veterans are contributing uniforms and equipment to be used in a new museum exhibit on the war in Alaska.
